CSERGE Director Prof Ian Bateman led the NEA Economics Team which involved many CSERGE members including: Barnaby Andrews, Emma Coombes, Amii Darnell, Steve Dugdale, Carlo Fezzi, Jo Foden, Tiziana Luisetti, Paul Munday, Grischa Perino, Antara Sen and Kerry Turner.
You can download a copy of the NEA Summary from UNEP-WCMC at http://uknea.unep-wcmc.org/ or via the Defra website at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/uknea
The NEA has already had a major impact upon UK Government policy and is acknowledged as the empirical underpinning of the UK Natural Environment White Paper (NEWP), launched on 7th June 2011 and downloadable here and from the Defra website at http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/whitepaper/
The contribution of the NEA if forming the NEWP is acknowledged through the White Paper including its Foreword from Caroline Spelman MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The following is an extract from that foreword.
From the Foreword to the Natural Environment White Paper:
“The National Ecosystem Assessment has given us the evidence to inform our decisions. It makes clear that government and society need to account better for the value of nature, particularly the services and resources it provides.
This White Paper – the first on the natural environment for over 20 years – places the value of nature at the centre of the choices our nation must make: to enhance our environment, economic growth and personal wellbeing. By properly valuing nature today, we can safeguard the natural areas that we all cherish and from which we derive vital services.
Valuing nature properly holds the key to a green and growing economy, one which invests in nature – not just for us but for our children’s children.”
The Rt Hon. Caroline Spelman MP
Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
