CSERGE and Valuing Nature
CSERGE Director Ian Bateman is Principle investigator on the newly awarded NERC Interdisciplinary Network for Valuing Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Natural Resource Use.
In order for natural scientists to provide evidence and advice to inform decision makers, they need to understand the complexity of the ways in which the natural environment underpins human well-being.
In addition, economic, social and political scientists need a better appreciation of the biological, chemical and physical interactions which underpin ecosystem processes. This will enable them to determine spatial and temporal variation in the delivery and value of ecosystem services.
The co-construction of knowledge arising from a more interdisciplinary framework should help to reduce confusion over terminology and, through the involvement of stakeholders, ensure that the approach is fit-for-purpose. A shared understanding between disciplines and stakeholders is vital for sustainable natural resource use.
